Job Summary:

Santa Lucia School seeks an enthusiastic Grades 6-8 teacher to lead a multi-age classroom using a nature-based, project-driven approach. This role involves delivering engaging, hands-on literacy, math, science, and social studies lessons while fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Candidates with experience in project-based learning, outdoor education, and the Science of Reading are preferred. Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid California Teaching Credential (preferred)

  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Live Scan clearance with the CA Department of Justice.

  • CPR certification.

  • A current tuberculosis clearance.

  • Ability to create and facilitate hands-on learning experiences, including outdoor fieldwork and service learning project

Position Overview:
Santa Lucia School is seeking a passionate, creative, and flexible  teacher to join our close-knit community of educators. Founded in 1985, Santa Lucia School is dedicated to providing a nature-based, project-driven educational experience for K-8 students. Our unique program integrates hands-on learning, service projects, and outdoor education. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to student-centered learning, environmental education, and social-emotional development.

This role involves teaching a small class of multi-age students in Grade 6-8. The teacher will collaborate with a dynamic team of educators to create engaging units of study and lessons integrating literacy, math, science, and social studies through place-based and project-based learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan & Implement Instruction:
    • Develop and deliver differentiated lessons in literacy, math, science, and social studies that are engaging and tied to students’ interests.

    • Incorporate experiential and place-based learning opportunities, including outdoor education, nature journaling, and fieldwork.

    • Use EL Education resources to create engaging, theme-based units.

    • Align instruction with EL Education, RightStart Math, and Lexia resources.

  • Student Engagement & Support:
    • Foster a positive classroom environment that promotes curiosity, creativity, and collaboration.

    • Implement SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) strategies to support students’ emotional well-being.

    • Provide targeted reading intervention, including phonics, word study, and comprehension strategies.

    • Support students with learning differences, such as giftedness, dyslexia, ADHD, and autism, using a strengths-based approach.

  • Community Engagement:
    • Lead and participate in student clubs and service learning projects

    • Help organize and participate in school events, including performances, community festivals, and fund-raisers

    • Build strong relationships with students, families, and community partners.

  • Assessment & Progress Monitoring:
    • Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and guide instruction.

    • Maintain accurate records of student performance and provide regular feedback to students and families.

    • Conduct Lexia and diagnostic assessments to inform instruction.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field (Master’s preferred).

  • Valid California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential (preferred)

  • Experience teaching grades k-8, preferably in a multi-age classroom setting.

  • Experience with project-based, nature-based, or outdoor learning is highly desirable.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

  • Commitment to ongoing professional growth and learning.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with the Science of Reading.

  • Experience working with students with learning differences, including giftedness, dyslexia, and ADHD.

  • Knowledge of permaculture, sustainability practices, or environmental education.

  • Ability to create and facilitate hands-on learning experiences, including outdoor fieldwork and service learning projects.

Salary & Benefits:

Santa Lucia School offers a salary based on experience and qualifications. This position provides the unique perk of a four-day workweek with students (Monday through Thursday), with Fridays dedicated to planning, collaboration, and professional development. Staff meets one Friday a month on campus. The school year begins the day after Labor Day and ends early to mid-June.
